History of the Hudson Historical Society

Hudson Historical Society History 1916-Current

The Hudson Historical Society was organized on March 29, 1916 at a meeting at the Hudson Public Library. The stated purpose of the society was: “To awaken and perpetuate an active interest in all historical subjects pertaining to the Town of Hudson, and also to its earliest settlement, known as Howe’s Mills; to collect genealogy and writings belonging to the history of the town; to collect any articles- historic or artistic, antique or modern- which are valuable because of local character.”

Caleb L. Brigham, the first president, suggested that the society be incorporated, that it might hold gifts of money and receive bequests. In October of 1916, a final and definite organization was effected, with 22 charter members and by-laws were written and adopted.

The village of Feltonville became the town of Hudson in 1866 , after the town of Berlin had ceded some territory for the new town. Formation of the Society was first suggested in 1913 when a committee from the Hudson Board of Trade began to plan a celebration of the town’s 50th reunion.

The Museum’s first home was on the third floor of the Hudson Public Library, where it remained until it was moved to the third floor of Town Hall to make room for library expansion in 1993.

Society meetings were held in the Civics Room of the library until 1993, and since that year have been held at the First Federated Church Hall, 200 Central St.

To create more space for municipal department offices, the Society moved from the Town Hall location to the Hudson Mill Business Center (former Hudson Worsted Co. mill), 43 Broad St., fourth floor, in the summer of 2007.
